What is required for Americans to enter the United Kingdom in 2026?
An Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is now fully mandatory for all U.S. passport holders.
If you are traveling to the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland), you must obtain an ETA before boarding your flight, ferry, or train.
What is the UK ETA? The ETA is a digital travel permission required for visa-exempt visitors, including adults, children, and infants. (Note: British and Irish passport holders do not need an ETA).
How to Apply: Complete a quick application online at gov.uk or via the official UK ETA app (best).
Fee: £20 (approx. $25 USD) per traveler.
Validity: Valid for 2 years or until your passport expires—whichever comes first. It allows unlimited trips to the UK, with stays of up to 6 months per visit.
What is the current status of ETIAS for Europe?
ETIAS is NOT required in 2026.
If you have heard about ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System), you can cross it off your pre-trip to-do list for now!
Status Update: The European Union has postponed the ETIAS rollout until 2027. U.S. passport holders do not need to fill out pre-travel security clearances or pay any ETIAS fees for trips in 2026.
Watch Out for Scams: Because ETIAS is not live, no official applications are open. Beware of unauthorized third-party websites offering to "presell" or process ETIAS approvals.
When it eventually launches: The authorization fee will be €20 (for travelers ages 18 to 70) and will remain valid for 3 years.
What should I expect at border control in the EU (Schengen Area)?
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is now active!
While ETIAS is paused, Europe’s new automated Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully operational across 29 European countries in the Schengen Area.
What it is: The EES is a digital border management system that replaces manual physical passport stamps with secure electronic records.
How it works: When you arrive at an EU/Schengen border kiosk, your passport will be scanned, and basic biometric data (a facial scan and digital fingerprints) will be collected on your first entry.
Cost & Pre-registration: There is no cost and no action required prior to departure. It happens directly at border control upon arrival.
Rules & Limits: The short-stay rule remains the same: Americans can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen Area without a visa. The EES automatically tracks these days to ensure compliance.
Essential Checklist for Traveling Abroad
Passport Validity: Ensure your passport has at least 6 months of validity remaining beyond your return travel dates and has at least 2 to 3 blank pages. (Schengen countries require passports to be valid for at least 3 months past your intended departure date and issued within the last 10 years, but we still suggest 6 months validity).
Travel Insurance: While not mandatory for entry, comprehensive travel insurance protecting against trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and luggage loss is always recommended.
S.T.E.P. Enrollment: Enrolling in the U.S. State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) allows the U.S. Embassy to reach you and provide critical security updates in an emergency.
