Keeping You Ahead of the Curve: EU Delays ETIAS Until 2027

At Vacations To Remember, your peace of mind is our highest priority. We know that planning a dream trip comes with a lot of moving parts, and navigating international travel rules can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. That’s why we make it our mission to keep our ears to the ground, monitoring the latest global travel updates so you don’t have to. We believe in transparency and want to ensure you always have the most accurate, up-to-date information the moment it happens.

If you’ve been chatting with us recently about your upcoming European getaways, you know we’ve been keeping a close eye on Europe’s upcoming electronic travel system. Today, we have a major update to share: The European Union has officially delayed the launch of the ETIAS program until 2027. (FYI: The UK ETA is already in effect and not related to this update!)

What’s Behind the Delay?

This is not the first time the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) has seen its timeline shift (it was originally slated for late 2023). This latest postponement—originally reported by the Financial Times—comes as EU officials work to iron out tech glitches with their other new border program, the Entry/Exit System (EES).

The EES is the physical, biometric system at European borders that scans passports, fingerprints, and faces for non-EU visitors. Because travelers have recently experienced lengthy wait times at major hubs in countries like Spain, France, Italy, and Poland, EU implementation agencies decided to push ETIAS back to 2027 to ensure border processing is running smoothly before adding another layer to the mix.

What Does This Mean for You?

The good news? It means fewer logistical hoops and temporary cost savings for your upcoming European vacations!

  • No Immediate Action Needed: You do not need to worry about applying for pre-travel authorization for any trips over the next several months.

  • Fee Delayed: The planned €20 application fee per person will not take effect until the full rollout.

  • Official Date TBD: The EU has stated they will announce the exact start date several months prior to the 2027 launch. Rest assured, as soon as that date is announced, we will let you know immediately.

A Quick Refresher: What is ETIAS?

When it eventually launches in 2027, ETIAS will be a mandatory pre-travel screening approval for visitors from visa-exempt nations (including the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.) entering 30 European countries.

It will be an online form that takes about 10 minutes to complete, requiring only a valid passport and a payment card. Once approved, an ETIAS will be linked to your passport and remain valid for three years (or until your passport expires).

Vacations To Remember Has You Covered

We know that changing travel regulations can cause a bit of worry, but that is exactly why you have us in your corner. We are always studying the fine print. When ETIAS finally does roll out, Vacations To Remember is fully prepared to handle the application process on your behalf.

Please note that the EU strictly requires individual applications and individual signed declarations of representation for every single traveler, including children (no group or family applications are permitted). But don't worry—when the time comes, we will guide you through every single step to ensure a seamless process.

We love helping you see the world, and we are dedicated to protecting your vacation investments and your peace of mind. If you have any questions at all about how this delay impacts your upcoming travel plans, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We’re always here for you!
