Athens Uncovered: Your Ultimate Guide to the Birthplace of Western Civilization
Are you dreaming of an adventure filled with ancient history, delicious food, and breathtaking views? Look no further than Athens, Greece! Here are some of our favorite tips to help you make the most of your journey.
Navigating the City
Getting around Athens is an adventure in itself. While taxis are a convenient option, remember that not all drivers are created equal. If you feel like your fare is too high, simply ask for a receipt. They are required to give you one, which ensures you're paying the correct metered amount.
Mopeds are everywhere and drivers can be a bit wild, but that's just part of the city's lively energy. Just keep an eye out when crossing streets!
Attire and Acropolis Adventures
When planning your visit to the Acropolis, we have two essential tips for you. First, wear comfortable shoes—preferably sneakers! You’ll be doing a lot of climbing, and you'll want to be able to enjoy the hike up without any discomfort. Don't worry, you can still look stylish while staying comfortable.
Second, be prepared for the heat! Buy water at the entrance of the Acropolis before you start your ascent, as there are no vendors at the top. It's also a great idea to bring a small umbrella for some much-needed shade. Remember to stay hydrated!
The Acropolis Museum is a separate attraction from the Acropolis and the Parthenon. While it has a separate entrance fee, it’s well worth it if you’re a history buff. The exhibits are fascinating and provide a deeper context for the ancient sites you'll be seeing.
A Foodie's Paradise
Prepare your taste buds for a culinary journey! You may have heard of gyros, but in Athens, they're pronounced "yee-rose." You'll find them served on a plate with your meat of choice, along with pita bread, and they are incredibly delicious.
If you're on a budget or simply want to try a variety of dishes, don't be afraid to order from the appetizer menu. You'll find an incredible array of small plates, from mussels and calamari to tzatziki with pita and even octopus. It’s a fantastic way to experience a range of flavors without committing to a large entree.
For the freshest seafood and meat, visit the open-air market near the Monastirakiou Market. It's a true feast for the senses and you can find a few wonderful taverns to eat at nearby.
For a magical dining experience, take advantage of the many rooftop restaurants at sunset. The views of the illuminated Acropolis are simply stunning and make for a perfect dinner backdrop.

Exploring the City's Charm
Athens is a vibrant city with a culture all its own. You'll notice cats everywhere, especially at outdoor dining spots. It's completely normal to see people feeding them.
Plaka is a dream for anyone who loves taking pictures. The narrow alleys are full of beautiful, picturesque spots with colorful bougainvillea. Feel free to explore, but remember that these are people’s homes, so be mindful and respect their privacy.
The Greek people can sometimes seem a bit reserved, but they are incredibly kind. Don't be discouraged by a seemingly gruff taxi driver or a short-tempered shop worker; they are truly good people, and their straightforward demeanor is simply part of the culture. A little politeness goes a long way.
Speaking of which, learning a few Greek words like "good morning," "please," and "thank you" can make a world of difference. It shows respect and is always appreciated.
Tipping and Culture
While you’re enjoying the hospitality, please remember to tip your hotel staff, drivers, waiters, and tour guides. We noticed a number of tourists not tipping, and it’s a shame. Tipping is a thoughtful way to show your appreciation for their service.
Lastly, one of the most striking things about Athens is how stylish everyone is. Women of all ages are incredibly well-dressed. It's a fun and inspiring part of the city's atmosphere!
We hope these tips help you plan an amazing trip to Athens. It's a city that’s full of history, culture, and wonderful people.
